A mill town on Manalapan Brook
Helmetta became a borough in 1888, formed from part of East Brunswick. It grew around a snuff mill that opened in the 1820s and was later acquired by George W. Helme, and it is named for his daughter, Etta Helme. The mill operated for more than a century before closing in 1993.
The G.W. Helme Snuff Mill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, is described as a classic example of a late 1800s mill town.

- Mill worker housing: Houses and cottages built for mill employees, part of the historic district.
- Helmetta Pond: The pond that once powered the mill, at the edge of the Jamesburg Park Conservation Area.
