Neighborhoods
A railroad town with a long history
The name Metuchen first appeared in records in 1688 and is believed to come from a Native American chief. Main Street was laid out in 1705, and the railroad, completed to New Brunswick in 1836, shaped how the downtown grew. Metuchen became a borough in 1900, separating from Raritan Township, which is now Edison.
In the late 1800s the town drew artists, writers and thinkers, which earned it the nickname the Brainy Borough. Edison now surrounds Metuchen completely.
