Neighborhoods

A town built on the brook

A gristmill stood on Lawrence Brook by 1769, and the settlement was first called Bergen's Mill. The name Milltown is believed to come from residents going to the mill in town. The borough was formed from part of North Brunswick in 1889.

Lawrence Brook flows through the center of town after leaving Farrington Lake, and a dam under Main Street creates the Mill Pond. The Michelin tire factory employed about 3,000 people here, and Michelin's battlefield guides to the Western Front were printed in Milltown after the First World War.

Homes

What you will find

  • Single family homes: Most of the borough's homes are single family houses on the residential streets around Main Street and the Mill Pond.
  • Converted factory condominiums: The historic Milltown India Rubber Company building on Washington Avenue, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been converted to condominiums.

Worth knowing: Lawrence Brook and the Mill Pond run through the middle of town, so homes near the water should be checked against the flood maps before a sale. For the converted factory condominiums, we review the association documents, fees and rules early so there are no surprises.
