First things first
North Hanover, New Hanover and Wrightstown
North Hanover Township was split off from New Hanover Township in 1905, and in 1918 parts of the township were taken to form the Borough of Wrightstown. Today North Hanover, New Hanover and Wrightstown are three separate municipalities, each with its own government and its own property tax rate.
The McGuire part of Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst lies in both North Hanover and New Hanover. Because the names are so close, we confirm the municipality and the block and lot on every North Hanover home.
Neighborhoods
Villages and farm roads
North Hanover has no downtown. It is a township of small villages and crossroads strung along the county roads, with farmland in between.
- Jacobstown: The village along County Route 528 that holds the township's municipal building.
- Arneytown: A village on Province Line Road at the Monmouth County line, with a 58 acre historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Ellisdale and Sykesville: Smaller crossroads communities inside North Hanover that you will see on maps and deeds. The state's environmental agency maps Sykesville in North Hanover Township.
- Part of Cookstown: Most of the village of Cookstown is in New Hanover, but New Hanover Township notes that a portion lies in North Hanover.
Homes
What you will find
- Farms and country homes on larger lots along the county roads, many next to preserved farmland.
- Village homes in and around Jacobstown, Arneytown and the other crossroads communities, including older houses in the Arneytown Historic District.
- Homes near the base in the parts of the township closest to Wrightstown and Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst.
Worth knowing: Three things matter here. First, farmland preservation. State figures through 2020 show 37 preserved farms covering about 4,090 acres in North Hanover, the third most preserved acreage of any town in Burlington County, and preserved farms carry permanent deed restrictions. Second, part of the township is in the state designated Pinelands Area, where Pinelands rules can apply to land use. Third, many country homes rely on private wells and septic systems, so plan for a well test and a septic inspection. We confirm all three on every property.
