A township of old Pinelands place names
Tabernacle was formed in 1901 from parts of Shamong, Southampton and Woodland townships. It has no downtown. Homes spread along Route 206, County Route 532 and the local roads between them, and the eastern side of town runs into state forest. Some of the names you will hear:
- The Route 206 side: The western part of the township, along the main highway between Southampton and Shamong.
- The County Route 532 side: The middle of the township, along the road that runs west to Medford and east to Chatsworth.
- Old Pinelands place names: Bozuretown, Eagle, Fairview, Fox Chase, Friendship, Hampton Gate, Harris, Oriental, Paisley, Pine Crest, Sandy Ridge, Sooy Place, South Park, Speedwell and White Horse Station.
Homes
What you will find
- Single family homes on wooded lots along Route 206, County Route 532 and the roads between them.
- Farms and preserved land including 8 preserved farms covering about 1,341 acres, according to state figures through 2020.
- Homes at the edge of the state forest on the eastern side of the township, where the pines take over.
Worth knowing: All of Tabernacle is in the state designated Pinelands Area, so building, additions and land clearing must meet Pinelands rules as well as township zoning. Septic systems are a big part of wastewater handling in the Pinelands, and Pinelands rules call for a conventional septic system to be inspected, cleaned and certified to the local board of health every three years. For a new home on less than 3.2 acres, the Pinelands Commission generally requires an advanced treatment system instead. We ask for the septic records early, because they matter to buyers here.
