Villages and place names

Chatsworth and the pines around it

Woodland was formed in 1866 from parts of Pemberton, Shamong, Southampton and Washington townships. Chatsworth is the mailing address for most of the township, so a Chatsworth address usually means Woodland Township. Most of the rest is forest, bog and preserve.

  • Chatsworth: The village where County Routes 532 and 563 meet, home to the municipal building on Main Street and the annual Cranberry Festival.
  • Four Mile: The area around Four Mile Circle, where Route 70 and Route 72 meet near the township's northwestern edge.
  • Other place names: Bullock, Butlers Place, DeCou Pond, Dukes Bridge, Goose Pond, Jones Mill, Lebanon, Long Causeway, Old Halfway and Woodmansie.

Homes

What you will find

  • Village homes in and around Chatsworth along Main Street and the county roads.
  • Homes on large wooded lots set back in the pines off Route 72 and County Routes 532 and 563.
  • Bog and forest land where much of the township is state forest or private preserve rather than house lots.

Worth knowing: All of Woodland is in the state designated Pinelands Area, so building, additions, land clearing and subdivisions are reviewed under Pinelands rules as well as township zoning. With about 17 people per square mile in 2020, ranked 563rd of 565 New Jersey towns, much of the township is state forest and preserve rather than house lots, which limits what can be built nearby. We review the Pinelands rules, the well and the septic before you commit.
