Neighborhoods
A township of named sections
Mount Laurel was carved out of Evesham Township in 1872 and takes its name from a hill once covered in laurel. It has no single downtown. Instead, people often name their section, and many of those names go back to old crossroads and settlements.
- Ramblewood: A neighborhood large enough to be counted by the Census Bureau as its own community, with about 6,700 people in 2020.
- Rancocas Woods: A named section of the township, with Interstate 295 Exit 43 signed for it.
- Other place names: You will also see Birchfield, Bougher, Centerton, Colemantown, Coxs Corner, Fellowship, Hartford, Heulings Hill, Masonville, Petersburg and Pine Grove on maps and deeds.
Homes
What you will find
- Single family homes in neighborhoods such as Ramblewood and Rancocas Woods and across the township's other sections.
- Ethel Lawrence Homes: A 140 unit townhome style affordable neighborhood that opened its first phase in 2000, owned and managed by the nonprofit Fair Share Housing Development and tied to the Mount Laurel case.
- Older homes on historic roads near the old crossroads settlements that gave the sections their names.
Worth knowing: Mount Laurel gave its name to the New Jersey Supreme Court's Mount Laurel doctrine, which requires towns to use their zoning to make room for affordable housing. If a home is a deed restricted affordable unit, it carries its own sale and resale rules, and if it sits inside an association, the association documents matter as much as the house. We check for deed restrictions and read the association documents early on every listing.
